Most of us know chia seeds as a component of the novelty item Chia Pets. Cha cha cha chia! Sure, chia seeds make nice decorations, but they’re also nutritional powerhouses that contain omega 3s, calcium, potassium, antioxidants, protein, fiber and manganese.
When mixed with liquid, chia seeds form a sticky, gooey consistency that is ideal for creating pudding or drinks like those from Chia Star. I recently received samples of Chia Star’s cleanse program, which contains five different chia seed beverages that are USDA organic and non-GMO certified.
For their products, Chia Star mixes chia seeds with various fruit juices or teas, depending on the flavor. You half-sip, half-chew the drinks. Their flavors include:
- Blackberry Lime Refresh
- Pomegranate Apple Power
- Lemonberry Splash
- Peach Tea Green Fusion
- Pineapple Love
The little dots there are the chia seeds.
Chia Star has created a three-day cleanse program that you can follow meal-by-meal, but I opted to consume the drinks individually as mid-morning or mid-afternoon pick-me-ups. My favorite flavors are the Blackberry Lime and Lemon Berry since I love berries. I wasn’t a big fan of the Peach Green Tea flavor.
For the most part the ingredients are good, but I wonder why they use both fruit juice and fruit FLAVORS. The Blackberry Lime contains “organic blackberry flavor” and “organic lime flavor” as well as “organic blackberry juice concentrate” and “organic lime juice.”
Have you tried Chia Star? Any thoughts on the use of organic flavoring?
Note: I received free samples of Chia Star for this review.
