The book Jerry’s Vegan Women follows a thoughtful vegan character named Jerry Zuckerman as he encounters various women throughout his life. Through meeting these women, he gains perspective that further progresses his veganism.
Warning to parents: This one is NOT for kids! The author explicitly discusses sex.
ABOUT THE BOOK
Jerry’s Vegan Women, written by humorist Ben Shaberman, is a fun, poignant, and occasionally steamy collection of fictional stories that follows the adventures of Jerry Zuckerman as he makes his way through the shelters, sanctuaries, and bedrooms of an eclectic assortment of vegan women.
MY OVERALL IMPRESSION
This book is lighthearted and funny, making it a perfect read for a beach day or while traveling. The character Jerry is a relatable and loveable guy who is vegan and allergic to animals — something I can definitely relate to! Shaberman isn’t very in-your-face with the vegan rhetoric, but rather takes us on a journey of fun and interesting stories, making this book something even meat eaters can appreciate.
WHO SHOULD READ THIS BOOK
This book is best for adults since it does incorporate discussion of sex, affairs and romance.
WHAT SETS THIS BOOK APART
As the publisher says, “Unlike most vegan books on the market, which focus on nutrition, animal rights, and cooking, Jerry’s Vegan Women is about love, work life, and the search for identity and meaning of those committed to the vegan lifestyle.” It’s not a manifesto, but rather an easy-to-read group of stories that all vegans are sure to relate to in some way.
“Jerry’s Vegan Women is by no means a vegan manifesto,” says Shaberman. “Rather, its characters reveal the virtues, imperfections, and idiosyncrasies of those who choose who go meat-free.”
