Fast food is not the healthiest option on the planet, but hey, sometimes you’re on the road (like during this holiday season!) and the only thing in sight is an exit with a measly gas station and a few good ole’ American drive-thurs. Luckily, vegans can find a few things.
Here are 10 fast food restaurants that offer vegan options.
Dunkin’ Donuts
Sadly, none of the Dunkin’ Donuts donuts are vegan (WHYYY Dunkin?!?!). However, they have several other bread-y items that are vegan, as well as the hash browns. Pair those with some black Dunkin’ coffee and you’ve actually got a filling breakfast. Here’s a list of the vegan options:
- Bagels: Cinnamon Raisin, Cinnamon Raisin Bagel Twist, Everything, Garlic, Onion, Plain, Poppy Seed, Salt, and Sesame
- Hash Browns
- English Muffin
- French Roll
- Pretzel Twist
McDonald’s
This isn’t the best place for lunch or dinner, but McDonald’s actually works well for an on-the-road breakfast or snack. That’s because the apple pie is vegan. I REPEAT: MCDONALD’s APPLE PIE IS VEGAN. Pair that sucker with some McDonald’s coffee for a mid-morning pick-me-up. Not a bad road snack in a pinch, though it’s obviously not healthy. High fructose corn syrup? Ick? But like a I said, in a pinch…
Sonic
Stop for a snack at Sonic, where the French fries, tater tots and onion rings are all vegan. Add some ketchup, of course! You can’t order a vegan main option, but you can get a ciabatta bun with veggies like lettuce, tomato, onion, jalapeno and avocado.
Taco Bell
Taco Bell’s menu is surprisingly like SUPER DUPER easy to hack for vegans. They even have this handy page about how to order vegan there. Basically, to veganize anything, ask them to substitute beans for beef and order the item fresco style (extra tomatoes) with no cheese or sour cream. Instead, load up your item with vegan ingredients like guacamole, potatoes, extra lettuce and of course, hot sauce. This basic hack works for most menu items, like tacos, burritos, salads and even that famous Crunch Wrap Supreme. Here are the ingredients that Taco Bell has certified as vegan:
- Beans
- Black Beans
- Border Sauce – Fire
- Border Sauce – Hot
- Border Sauce – Mild
- Border Sauce – Verde
- Cantina Salsa
- Cilantro
- Flatbread
- Green Chili Sauce
- Green Tomatillo Sauce
- Guacamole
- Jalapenos
- Lettuce
- Mexican Pizza Sauce
- Onions
- Pico de Gallo
- Premium Latin Rice
- Rainforest Coffee
- Red Sauce
- Romaine Lettuce
- Salsa Del Sol
- Taco Shell
- Tomatoes
- Tortilla
- Tostada Shell
Del Taco
Get the tacos or a seven-layer veggie burrito at Del Taco, but do NOT order rice, because most locations’ rice is not vegan. However, the beans and the fries are vegan.

Denny’s
Denny’s offers a pretty hearty veggie burger that is vegan. Even the bun is vegan. Just ask for no cheese and maybe add some extra veggies instead. Every veggie burger needs its accompaniment of fries, and luckily the fries at Denny’s are in fact vegan!
Chick-Fil-A
Chick-Fil-A has a flaxseed flour flatbread that you can use to make a pretty hearty vegan wrap. Order a veggie wrap in that flatbread with no cheese. Add some Polynesian sauce, barbecue sauce, ketchup or mustard on the side to sauce things up. Their waffle fries are also a good vegan option.
Pizza Hut
Pizza Hut has an option where you can choose to add a flavor to your crust, and the pretzel crust one is vegan! Get a pretzel crust pizza with marinara sauce and veggies, then ask for no cheese. The French fries and ketchup are also vegan. For dessert, their cinnamon sticks with icing miraculously happen to be vegan and dairy-free.

Wendy’s
Wendy’s needs to step up their game and offer a vegan burger. But since they don’t, you can order a veggie sandwich with just veggies, ketchup and mustard on a bun. The fries and plain backed potato are also vegan.
Johnny Rocket’s
Johnny Rockets offers The Streamliner, which is a vegan Boca burger with grilled onions, lettuce, tomatoes, pickles, and mustard.

Some of these restaurants are better than others with their vegan options. I hope we will see these places add even more vegan items in the near future! To help make his happen, add your name to this online petition:

When ordering a veggie burger from these places, ask them how they cook it. Is it cooked on the same grill area as meat? Is there an option to cook it separately, away from the meat area? You can’t guarantee that a veggie burger from a fast food place will not be cooked on the same grill area as meat patties. Please ask when ordering if you are a strict vegan like myself. But if you eat meat and are looking for a healthier option when doing a fast food run, then ordering a veggie burger is a great option!

Subway has an excellent vegan burger called VEGGIE DELITE. I order it on wheat flatbread and use Italian dressing instead of the mayo based stuff and all the sliced trimmings. It is delicious!
