Do you all remember in December 2014 when White Castle announced it was adding a Veggie Slider to their menu? For vegetarians, the news was pretty cool, but vegans were unenthused because the bun still contained dairy. Now, it seems White Castle has listened to customer demand and is offering its first FULLY VEGAN Veggie Slider, woot woot!
The Veggie Slider is a mini Dr. Praeger’s veggie burger patty, which is made with vegetables like carrots, zucchini, peas, spinach, broccoli and more. Personally, I love this brand and chose their California Burger for my second Veggie Burger of the Month in September!
Now, I’m happy that America’s first fast-food hamburger chain has added a vegan bun to go along with that delicious Dr. Praeger’s patty.

According to a White Castle press release, the vegan bun came about after fans of the new sandwich expressed strong desire for a bun that would be considered consistent with a vegan diet. After the veggie slider launch, White Castle’s test kitchen and bakeries worked to modify its bun recipe to be responsive to customer comments and requests.
“As a family-owned business, one key thing we’ve learned in our 94 years is to ask good questions, listen to what customers tell us, and then act thoughtfully to meet their needs,” said Jamie Richardson, vice president of White Castle. “Modifying our bun recipe to meet vegan guidelines is a great example of giving customers what they crave and delivering an identical flavor experience. So whether ordering a veggie slider or a double cheeseburger, Craver generations everywhere will be able to enjoy the taste they crave.”
White Castle launched buns that they created using the new recipe in all restaurants in mid-September. The fast-food chain claims the taste and consistency of the bun is identical to the high quality standard for which it’s famous. But now, it’s also an option for vegan customers!
